Manufacturing Technique

Lost wax casting

The creation of Mandile jewels takes place in our laboratory with the technique of lost wax casting. It's a conceptually simple artisanal method, but which requires great skill in order to obtain surprising results. This very ancient type of workmanship, handed down for centuries, allows you to create unique and inimitable objects. Wearing a Mandile jewel is like wearing a small timeless work of art.

Working process
You start with a rubber mold created around a master model. Rubber is added layer by layer around the model, then heated to form a precise mold of the piece. The mold is injected with wax to create the ring shape. After the wax has hardened it can be removed and checked for quality and will reveal any defects in the rubber mould. Multiple wax models can be attached to form what is called a tree, or left as single models and placed in a cylindrical mould. Creating a tree allows us to cast multiple rings at the same time. The wax patterns are attached to a sprue, which will eventually form a channel for the molten metal to enter the mold. The flask is filled with investment to completely cover the wax. A vacuum removes all the air from the cylinder to create a perfect mold. Any air bubbles could compromise the quality of the casting. After drying, the cylinder is fired in the oven to harden the investment and melt the wax. This process takes several hours, and will become a complete mold. The mold now has a ring-shaped cavity ready for casting. The hardened mold is placed inside the casting machine and filled with molten metal. After the metal has been poured and set, the flask is removed from the machine and cooled in still hot water. The liner is washed, leaving behind the newly cast ring attached to the sprue. All that remains is to remove the sprue and polish the ring and possibly set the perfect gem.
